Overview

Building and leading high performance teams in innovative science and technology organizations is challenging because it requires managing complex projects with multiple people and tight timelines. This workshop provides participants with practical tools and techniques to build and strengthen teams, navigate team dynamics, improve accountability, manage conflict, and motivate teams during times of change. 


Attendees will learn how to enhance the collaborative and interpersonal skills of teams, fostering a more cohesive and productive work environment. Through a combination of interactive activities, group discussions, and expert guidance, participants will gain valuable insights and tools to strengthen their teamwork, communication, and problem-solving abilities. Special consideration is given to the challenges of leading teams in fast-paced, innovative life science and technology companies.

Format

The seminar program format is highly interactive, and involves small-group discussions of case studies using examples that are specific and relevant to the life science and technology industries. In addition, there are facilitated group discussions, writing assignments, practical exercises, short role-playing exercises, and opportunities to gain perspective from and share best practices with course instructors and other participants. Attendees are given theoretical background and overview of topics, as well as practical tools that can be implemented in the work place. Participants gain experience by practicing using new skills where appropriate.

Seminar Leader 

Gwen Acton, PhD, is the CEO of Vivo Group. She holds a doctorate in biology from MIT, and specializes in improving the leadership of innovation in science and technology organizations.

Topic B: Navigating Team Dynamics

  1. Stages of team development: Tuckman model
  2. Leadership roles in different stages of development
  3. Special considerations for virtual and hybrid teams


SESSION #2 Thursday 9am-12:30pm

Topic C. Managing Conflict

  1. Learning to recognize and manage productive vs. unproductive conflict
  2. Conflict management strategies and styles
  3. Assessing conflict response styles 

Topic D. Motivating Teams During Change

  1. Overview of change management approaches 
  2. How to identify and respond to individual motivations
  3. Getting buy-in by articulating team vision


Certificate of Completion

Participants who participate all sessions are eligible to receive a form confirming attendance of the program.


NOTE: Most companies under 100 Massachusetts employees are eligible for 100% reimbursement for this training through the Express Fund. If you have a valid MA DOR Certificate of Good Standing (COGS), you can file a course application here 21 days or more before the start of training.
